Hey.

Welcome to my days - my gray + away days. I write to share my smiles with you. Hope you have a nice stay!

A reunion to remember

A reunion to remember

Relentlessly you teach your children values - what’s important and how to be in the world. Seeing it pay off is one of life’s great joys. .

Dallas, Texas: 14 February 2020

Well, that was easy! Absolutely loving Qantas SYD > DFW direct flight. Just over 15 hours, with almost half of those sleep.

Uber to AirBnB, then a long walk (my favourite thing to do straight off a flight), before the long-awaited reunion. A mother and son. So many years apart but always my favourite person.

A typically low-key entrance, a call “Where do I park?”, and as I head down to meet him I see that he has flowers. The most beautiful (read: not service station) bunch of luscious white roses. I’m flawed. And delighted (it called for an immediate selfie).

That’s the smile when your 25 year old son arrives with white roses for you on Valentine’s Day.

And so it begins - our weekend in Dallas. We’re getting better at this, good even, by now. We know what things are our common ground, and we happily focus on them. We give each other space for the things that we each need, and like , that are different. I’m proud of us. It took us a while to get here, and it wasn’t without tears (all mine), or harsh words (also mine). But here we are, and it’s fun.

So, we plan - just then and there, without stress and that makes me happy. Of course it’s sushi to start (a very longtime family favourite) and Tom has all the local knowledge and takes us to Sushi Kyoto in University Park. Lots of veggie options - delicious!

Then it’s luxury cinema and it’s next level. Huge! We see Birds of Prey, not a movie I would usually choose but a good common ground choice. Margot Robbie surprises but doesn’t disappoint.

A successful and rewarding first day on American soil.
