Hey.

Welcome to my days - my gray + away days. I write to share my smiles with you. Hope you have a nice stay!

I don't know how to say goodbye

I don't know how to say goodbye

The bittersweet last day of any housesit - the opportunity to show gratitude through your actions and the challenge of saying goodbye.

Asheville, North Carolina: 24 February 2020

Today is a day of action (much to snuggly Riley’s disappointment). I wake up, wash my hair (with the obligatory purple conditioner and wash ‘n’ squash) and the cleaning begins! Washing begins - sheets and towels all need to be done before I leave, as well as any dirty clothes (as it will be a week until I’m somewhere I can wash again). Dishwasher’s on, wash up, clean out the fridge, vacuum, mop.

My last walk with the two best friends a girl could have - the green harness for thoughtful, level-headed, handsome Seamus and the pink for energetic, fiesty, snuggly Riley. I’ll miss having them sleep in my room - mostly one on the bed (snuggled into the crook of my leg) and one nearby, on an armchair or in the kennel. I’ll miss not being able to sit down without a Jack Russell on my lap or by my side. and I will definitely miss watching their little legs move with such joy every single walk. Riley always pulling along at the front and poor old Seamus (mostly) patiently being dragged along behind.

And so, with the washing and cleaning all done, the suitcase packed and the Aussie tea towel and macadamia nuts in pride of place on the kitchen bench, I leave. Goodbye Asheville - goodbye Seamus and Riley. I will truly never forget you.

Then the next chapter begins. I make the drive to Asheville Airport (and eventually find the rental car drop-off area!). I swap cars and begin a foggy, frightening, rainy drive to Greensboro.
