The pink beanie gets a run
They said it would snow and it did. It snowed and snowed, and it was every bit as beautiful as I had imagined.
Asheville, North Carolina: 20 February 2020
I wake, the Jack Rusells stretch and Riley makes her morning dive under the covers. It’s cold and it’s nice to feel her warmth. I’m happy to stay here, we’re not in any rush.
And then I spot it. A few tiny, light flakes drifting down outside the bedroom window. IT’S SNOWING!
So that’s it - I’m up. I don’t know how long this falling snow will last, but I’m ready to do nothing but watch it fall.
I can’t even remember the last time I enjoyed a snowy morning. I grew up in a place where it snowed for a day or two each winter. I’ve seen snow maybe a dozen times since then, but not for years. I decide this calls for porridge (and, of course, more cinnamon coffee). Then Riley, Seamus and I snuggled into the chairs with a view, and marvel.
And, to my delight, the snow keeps coming. And it’s starting to settle - what a delight! But the first walk of the day beckons and I want to be able to go out in the snow before it stops. So, much to Seamus’ disapproval, we head out for our first walk on this snowy day.
My sister teases me that I love cold weather just so I can wear my pink beanie. It was certainly getting a run today!
As we head down the winding road it is magic - the way the snow is settling on the pine trees, on my hair, on their little noses. Big smiles!
Then we’re home - we’re cold and a little wet but delighted. Time to warm up and settle in. As the snow keeps on falling, I could only have imagined the magical scene it would create across the valley stretched in front of me. Within a couple of hours it’s a winter wonderland.
